THE CONCEPT

An alternative approach to sub-urban renewal was taken with a mid-century modern original in the bushy Yarra boulevard precinct. All the good features of a mid century period residence honoured and exemplified for the new millennium. The client was after a space that would be used for healing and a quiet studying environment as a professor.

THE CHALLENGE

The site 's access was acutely restricted by topography and vegetation. While an undercroft extension had previously been created, the owners' desire and need for additional space conflicted with the goal of creating retirement-friendly improvements for future use.

Challenging access on the steep riverside site at the end of a cul de sac answered by “living in the treetops.” Passive solar energy maximised within a cost effective expansion of living spaces. The designed outcome influenced by a request for flexible construction whilst living at home.

THE OUTCOME

Remodelling of spaces and expansion on manageable contours at the street frontage provided a solution commensurate with users expectations and within a manageable budget. The modernist existing character was complemented with a new palette of materials, colour and texture creating respectful and balanced connection between the existing and the new.
